The international museum of Hussars

The Massey museum, label “museum of France” comes back to life after a great  phase of restructuring and renovation of  the building and the collections.

It is situated in the heart of a beautiful garden with rare trees. It was made by the Placide Massey's initiative, horticulturist full of talent and Director of the vegetable garden of  Versailles in the XIXth century. The former house of mauresque style with an observation tower facing the Pyrenees, offers to the public a modern museum of Art and History.

The Massey museum is the first one  in the world to show an exhibition telling the history of the Hussars. This kind of light cavalry taking its origins in Hungary, has contributed to the fame of Tarbes.

The collection is rich of more than 17 000 objects offering an overview on one of the most unusual  and attractive military “phenomenon”, still linked today to a kind of imaginary.

The museum tour, constituted of historic periods, invites the visitor to go down in the history of the Hussars, through a chronological way, in France and in the world. It also permits to discover the uniforms, mirrors of the past fashions, and which are at the origin of the radiance of these military men during more than 4 centuries.

This is a spectacular whole of  130 dummies which is presented, alternating with complete uniforms, busts, pieces of clothing or equipment. All this collection is emphasized by the richness and the incredible diversity beginning in the XVIIth century to the progressive uniformity in the XXth  century.

Many tools help the visitor to return the objects, the weapons, and the uniforms in their context. Thus the collections and the history become accessible and understandable by everyone. Every visitor can be actor of his/her visit.
